Big Angler, Little Angler. Better Together.

Taking a child fishing is easy to get wrong and simple to get right. Here is what we have learned.

Their First Trip

  • Go short. Ninety minutes is plenty. End while they still want more.
  • Pick easy water. A pier, a canal, or a pond with willing panfish beats a spectacular spot with no bites.
  • Target quantity. Ten small fish will do more for a seven-year-old than one impressive one.
  • Bring snacks. More than you think. Then bring more.
  • Let them hold the rod. Even when you would do it better. Especially then.
  • Skip the lecture. Answer what they ask. The rest can wait.

Gear That Fits Small Hands

A short spincast combo, a light line, and a few small hooks will cover the first year. Sun protection matters more than tackle. Long sleeves with UPF, a cap, and a real seat in the shade will save a trip that heat would otherwise end.

Teach the Release Early

Show them how to wet their hands, how to hold a fish gently, and how to watch it swim away. Children take that seriously when you do. It becomes the part they remember.

Make It Yours

Matching shirts sound like a small thing. Then a kid puts one on at six in the morning without being asked, and it stops being small.

Our Kids’ & Youth Line is designed as matching sets for exactly that reason.
